Three creations from the 2019 Taiwan Lantern Festival are set to feature at the Maritime Museum of Denmark in August and next February’s Copenhagen Light Festival, according to Pingtung County Government Feb. 24.

Bamboo Field Records, Time in Ping-an and Nest of an Hengchun were selected on the strength of their eye-catching artistic, creative and innovative qualities. The lanterns are the result of collaboration between local talents and three Danish counterparts.

Elements of tribal folklore and a love of Mother Nature are the inspiration for Bamboo Field Records. The lantern encapsulates the Taiwan indigenous Paiwan people’s belief that women are symbolized by the moon.

Time in Ping-an employs computer-controlled light projection to tell the emotive tale of those who return home after having moved away. This theme carries over to Nest of an Hengchun, which is intended to serve as a beacon reminding those of the joys of their places of birth.

Pingtung County Government said such international art cooperation raises Taiwan’s profile abroad while expanding its international space. Deepening and strengthening exchanges between local and foreign artists enables more people to gain a deeper understanding of the country and its distinctive culture, it added.

The festival runs until March 3 at Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area, Donggang Township and Pingtung City in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan. According to the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the designs of the lanterns are based on a diverse selection of themes ranging from Taiwan’s ethnic groups to green technology.
