Taiwan placed 13th out of 63 major economies in the World Digital Competitiveness Ranking released Sept. 26 by Switzerland-based International Institute for Management Development.

Moving up three places overall from last year, Taiwan finished fourth in the Asia-Pacific ahead of Australia, 14th; New Zealand, 18th; China, 22nd; Japan, 23rd; and Malaysia, 26th. The U.S. maintained its top position, followed by Singapore, Sweden and Denmark, in that order.

Taiwan made improvements across all three of the main ranking factors, jumping two spots to 17th overall in Knowledge, two spots to 9th overall in Technology and 10 spots to 12th overall in Future Readiness.

According to National Development Council Minister Chen Mei-ling, the result spotlights the government’s work advancing digital transformation. Examples include the Digital Nation and Innovative Economic Development Program, Taiwan Smart Government Blueprint and Mobile Payment Promotion scheme.

First launched in 2017, the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking measures the capacity and readiness of economies across 51 indicators to adopt and explore digital technologies as a key driver for economic transformation in business, government and wider society. (YCH-E)
