A Taiwan-U.S. science and technology collaboration meeting wrapped up Sept. 23 in Virginia, underscoring the commitment of both sides to strengthening exchanges in key areas like education and fundamental research.
Organized by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. and the American Institute in Taiwan, the daylong event took place at the National Science Foundation. It was convened by Lin Minn-tsong, director-general of the Department of Natural Sciences and Sustainable Development under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Rebecca Keiser, head of the NSF Office of International Science and Engineering.
According to the MOST, representatives from the like-minded partners discussed ways of advancing cooperation in disciplines such as astrophysics, earth and marine sciences, ecology and semiconductors, as well as the promotion of education in STEM, or science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Progress was also reviewed on joint projects such as FACET, an interdisciplinary study on climate, erosion and tectonics feedback, and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the largest radio telescope in the world.
In addition, MOST participants brought NSF counterparts up to speed on key government policy initiatives promoting technological development and innovation like Taiwan Tech Arena, Global Research and Industry Alliance (GLORIA) and Project Moonshot.
According to the ministry, TTA fosters high-tech entrepreneurship in sectors like artificial intelligence; GLORIA, semiconductor manufacturing and software development; and PM, cutting-edge process technologies and AI talents in Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. (SFC-E)
