An exhibition exploring the animal kingdom through art and science kicked off Nov. 8 at Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum in southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City.
Organized by National Palace Museum, City University of Hong Kong and FSBM, “ANiMAL – Art, Science, Nature, Society” features animal-related objects from NPM’s collection alongside zoological research and new media art displays.
Running until Apr. 19, 2020, the exhibition seeks to convey the complexities of humanity’s relationship with other animals while fostering awareness regarding wildlife conservation and environmental protection issues.
It is split into four sections inspired by zoological studies from ancient to modern times, animal-based artworks, fictional creatures, and harmony between humanity and nature, respectively.
According to NPM, the event makes extensive use of digital media and interactive displays to appeal to a broad audience. Such mediums provide added cultural value because they inspire new visitors, the museum said.
Established in 1965, NPM is home to the world’s largest collection of Chinese imperial art, boasting nearly 700,000 antiquities spanning 7,000 years from the prehistoric Neolithic period to the end of the Qing dynasty. The institution’s Southern Branch in Chiayi County opened in 2015 to showcase artifacts from diverse Asian civilizations. (RAY-E)
