Taiwan ruled the roost at the 2019 Golden Pin Design Award held Dec. 5 at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei City, claiming 19 out of 30 top honors.

Organized by government-backed Taiwan Design Center and the Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, this year’s edition attracted over 7,000 entries from 31 countries and territories.

The two special annual awards went to Taiwan designs, namely an interactive website designed by Taiwan Re-Think Environmental Education Association and SimpleInfo Design to educate the public on household waste entering the ocean, as well as a beverage container made from recycled glass designed by Kiwico Corporation and Spring Pool Glass.

Both the winners echo the theme of this year’s GPDA “designing for sustainability,” which focuses on the design industry’s role in implementing the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.

According to TDC, prize recipients were determined by an international 10-member panel including luminaries such as Chan Wei-hsiung from Taiwan, founder of Business Next; Luisa Bocchietto from Italy, former president of the World Design Organization; and Tony Chi from the U.S., an inductee into Interior Design’s Hall of Fame in 2009 and founder of New York-based design firm Tonychi Studio.

Launched by IDB under the MOEA in 1981, Taiwan’s Golden Pin Design Award recognizes internationally leading commercial products and projects entered by design teams and industry professionals. (RAY-E)
