The winners of a competition to produce videos promoting Taiwan’s efforts to realize the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals were announced Dec. 8 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during a ceremony at Tamkang University in New Taipei City, spotlighting how the government is fostering the country’s next generation of creative talent.

Organized in collaboration with Taipei City-based Kleinerfisch.com, the contest attracted 100 submissions from 85 two-member teams comprising mostly local college students and young marketing professionals.

Of these, 12 teams made it to the final round, where each was given 24 hours to produce a one-minute video.

Top honor went to “The Pen” by team Wunderman Thompson Taipei, which tells the story of the pen President Tsai Ing-wen used to sign the bill legalizing same-sex marriage in Taiwan earlier this year.

Second place went to “Waste Man - Where Does a Waste of Space Like Me Go When I Die?” by team 1421, followed by “Make Land Smile, Start From Taiwan” by team Yanjing x Lianguang in third place.

According to the MOFA, the winners were determined by an international panel of judges including Nadya Kirillova from Russia, creative director of Japan’s Dentsu Team B; Carlos Andres Rodriguez from Colombia, creative director of MullenLowe SSP3; and Juan Pablo Garcia from Colombia, general business director of MullenLowe SSP3.

As well as being published on the MOFA’s Trending Taiwan YouTube channel, the winning videos will be entered into international competition at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity set for June 22-26, 2020 in France. The MOFA will provide NT$250,000 (US$8,192) in sponsorship for the creators to attend the event. (RAY-E)
