Premier Su Tseng-chang was reappointed Jan. 13 in Taipei City and the Cabinet left unchanged following the victory of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party in Taiwan’s presidential and legislative elections two days before.
Su, who led the Cabinet in an en masse resignation earlier the same day as required under the Constitution, was praised by reelected President Tsai Ing-wen for his outstanding effectiveness and efficiency in implementing government policies.
Over the past year, Su adroitly managed external issues like the U.S.-China trade war, Tsai said. The stability he provided in this area, as well as in dealing with internal challenges, proved invaluable in delivering good governance, she added.
In response, Su thanked Tsai for her trust and the opportunity to continue serving the people of Taiwan.
All members of the Cabinet will remain at their posts and keep fulfilling public expectations, Su said. No effort is to be spared in promoting key policies while charting a safe course for Taiwan at a time of great international and domestic change, he added.
Su, 72, was tapped by Tsai for the job in January 2019 following the resignation of Vice President-elect Lai Ching-te as premier. He was secretary-general to President Chen Shui-bian from 2004 to 2005; magistrate of Taipei County, now New Taipei City, 1997 to 2004; and magistrate of Pingtung County in southern Taiwan, 1989 to 1993.
