New Taipei City is taking effective action to prevent a possible outbreak of pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus first reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year in line with its responsibilities toward implementing the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030, according to New Taipei Secretariat Director General Yao Ching-yu Feb. 11.

Yao made the remarks at the 10th World Urban Forum in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, while presenting New Taipei’s Voluntary Local Review—a declaration reporting SDG progress.

As the most populated municipality in Taiwan, New Taipei has a vital role to play in safeguarding the health of the country as a whole, Yao said. Implementing a rock-solid plan for virus prevention is the responsibility of any local government serious about SDG 3: providing good health and well-being for all citizens, she added.

The city has taken action to ensure sufficient supplies of domestic goods, standardized procedures for sterilization and effective care in the community for older people, Yao said, adding the city is working flat out to guarantee no one is left behind in its efforts.

Established in 2001 by the U.N., the biennial WUF aims to deal with the pressing global issues of rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies. The six-day 2020 edition attracted more than 18,000 experts and officials from 170 countries and territories. (YCH-E)
