Taiwan hosted a videoconference with Canada and the U.S. to share the country’s experiences and best practices for combating coronavirus May 6 in Taipei City.

Co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Taipei City-based Taiwan Adventist Hospital and local governments in Canada and the U.S., the event focused on how the Taiwan Model can help mitigate challenges faced by participants in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. It was attended by officials, public health experts and medical personnel from Toronto, Canada, as well as the U.S. states and territories of California, Washington, Hawaii, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Notable speakers included Deputy Foreign Minister Hsu Szu-chien, TAH President Dr. Huang Hui-ting, Governor of Guam Lourdes Aflague Leon Guerrero and Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands Ralph Deleon Guerrero Torres.

In his opening remarks, Hsu said the Taiwan Model has earned widespread recognition in the international community for its management of coronavirus. Swift and decisive actions, a whole-of government approach, transparent information sharing and active contact tracing have proven highly effective in limiting spread of the disease, he added.

Also paying dividends are measures ramping up the production of surgical masks and disinfectant sprays along with the implementation of a rationing system ensuring adequate supplies for residents, he said, adding that carrying out infection prevention in hospitals has likewise played a key role.

According to Hsu, the government will continue working with allies and like-minded partners around the world to overcome the public health crisis. Taiwan Can Help ensure a seamless global disease prevention network while realizing Health For All, he said. (YCH-E)
