National Palace Museum’s Children’s Gallery reopened July 1 in Taipei City, offering visitors an immersive experience while promoting access to Taiwan’s cultural heritage for those of all ages.

The gallery makes extensive use of digital media and interactive games to appeal to a broader audience, NPM said. No longer limited to those aged 5-12, the gallery welcomes museumgoers young and old to foster an intergenerational learning environment, it added.

Through exhibits incorporating augmented reality flashcards, projectors, motion sensors and touch screens, visitors can gain a greater understanding of over 30 pieces in NPM’s collection, including “Illustrated Album of Sea Oddities” and “Up the River during Qingming” from the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), as well as topics spanning calligraphy, tea culture and painting framing, the museum said.

Committed to enhancing accessibility, NPM has also equipped the gallery with new facilities like all-gender and family restrooms, a nursing room, additional seating and a stroller storage area.

Established in 1965, NPM is home to the world’s largest collection of Chinese imperial art, boasting nearly 700,000 antiquities spanning 7,000 years from the prehistoric Neolithic period to the end of the Qing dynasty. The institution’s Southern Branch in Chiayi County opened in 2015 to showcase artifacts from diverse Asian civilizations. (YCH-E)
