Article 43 of the Hong Kong national security law was strongly condemned by the Mainland Affairs Council as its implementation rules took effect July 7.
Under the new stipulations, Hong Kong police are authorized to require political organizations and agents of foreign countries, including those of Taiwan, to provide information on their activities concerning Hong Kong in order to enable investigation into potential violations of the law.
The MAC said the rule is excessive and dangerously vague, in addition to reflecting profound disrespect toward Taiwan’s political parties, civil groups, organizations and citizens based in Hong Kong. An unprecedented attempt by a totalitarian power to expand the scope of its censorship, the move will result in panic among Taiwan nationals living in Hong Kong while stifling normal exchanges and interactions between the two sides, the council added.
According to the MAC, Taiwan is concerned about the situation in Hong Kong but has refrained from interfering in its affairs. Hong Kong should likewise avoid imposing political influence on Taiwan institutions and undermining cross-strait relations, the MAC said.
The council said the government will spare no effort to work with legal professionals as well as countries and territories worldwide to safeguard the rights, safety and freedom of Taiwan citizens and organizations in Hong Kong.
The sentiment was shared by President Tsai Ing-wen during a sideline news conference at the 50th anniversary celebration of Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) July 7 in Taipei City.
Tsai said the government is keeping a close eye on the latest developments in Hong Kong and will consider launching countermeasures if the law’s implementation imposes any negative impacts on Taiwan and its people. The president also reiterated her disapproval of the law, stating that it erodes the rights and freedom of Hong Kong people.
The Hong Kong national security law was passed by the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress last month and took effect June 30. (YCH-E)
