A total of 75 venues in the cities of Taipei and Taichung feature in the 2020 Bib Gourmand selection, according to publisher Michelin Guide Aug. 11.

Taipei’s lineup comprises 31 restaurants and 23 street food stalls with seven new additions. Taichung in central Taiwan—incorporated for the first time in the internationally acclaimed foodie bible—boasts 21 locations.

All venues were assessed on the menu’s authenticity, quality and value for money. The bill for a three-course meal, excluding drinks, was capped at NT$1,000 (US$35).

Taipei’s seven new additions include Chang Hung Noodles, Yijiazi and Yuan Fang Guabao in Wanhua District, as well as Taj in Daan District. Chang Hung is renowned for its chrysanthemum pork noodles, while Yijiazi and Yuan Fang Guabao are celebrated for north Indian and southern Taiwan’s Tainan City fare, respectively.

Of Taichung’s 21 venues, 10 specialize in Taiwan cuisine. Standouts are Chin Chih Yuan and Fu Din Wang in Central District, Dong Shan Zhan in Beitun District and Fu Juang Yuan in West District.

Chin Chih Yuan is a favorite for its steamed local rice and deep-fried pork ribs, while Fu Din Wang, Dong Shan Zhan and Fu Juang Yuan keep customers coming back for more on the back of gelatinous pork trotter, hock and leg braised in mouthwatering marinade, claypot-roasted chicken, and pork trotter simmered in a broth of soy, chili, rock sugar and shallot, respectively.

Lin Chia-lung, minister of transportation and communications, welcomed the 75-strong selection. He said the result is testament to years of concerted efforts by the ministry and Tourism Bureau to promote Taiwan’s distinctive cuisine.

According to Lin, the Michelin Guide is helping raise the profile and reputation of Taiwan food and related culture in the international arena. It also enables travelers from abroad to enjoy value-added experiences when visiting the country, he said.

The third edition of the Michelin Guide Taipei and Taichung 2020 is set for release Aug. 24. (TYT-E)
