Taipei Music Center was inaugurated Aug. 27 in the city’s Nangang District, marking the latest in a series of government measures designed to promote Taiwan’s music industry.
At the launch ceremony, President Tsai Ing-wen said the state-of-the-art center, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and operated under the auspices of Taipei City Government, is a shining example of collaboration between the central and local governments. One of the key requirements for developing Taiwan’s cultural and creative industries is providing more venues for live music, she added.
Also at the event, Premier Su Tseng-chang said the cultural industries are key components in the government’s policy platform, adding TMC and Kaohsiung Music Center, the latter of which is set to be completed later this year in the southern city, can serve as twin engines for driving the country’s music industry back to global prominence.
Designed by New York City-based RUR Architecture DPC, the NT$6.26 billion (US$212.13 million) TMC sits on 8.96 hectares of land comprising three buildings and an outdoor plaza.
The main concert hall, which features a striking angular facade, can house up to 6,000 people, while the exhibition hall is the first in Taiwan dedicated to pop music, featuring audiovisual and interactive exhibits documenting the local industry.
TMC also includes a creative area, which combines performance and communal spaces replete with four live music houses, and an outdoor plaza, which offers a leisure zone open to the general public and available for hosting a variety of activities. (SFC-E)
