The government remains committed to taking part in the activities, mechanisms and meetings of the U.N., demonstrating that Taiwan is willing and able to contribute to global initiatives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Aug. 28.
Its statement follows an op-ed titled “Recover Better Together—Taiwan Can Help” written by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and published in international media outlets detailing the aspiration of the country’s 23.5 million people to participate in the U.N. system.
According to the MOFA, the government urges the U.N. to rectify its discriminatory policy barring ROC (Taiwan) passport holders and journalists from its events. The country’s citizens should have the right to participate in an equal and dignified manner in all activities related to the implementation of the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, the ministry said.
To demonstrate Taiwan’s value to the world, the MOFA said it will produce a short video documenting the country’s success in managing COVID-19 and host virtual side events at the U.N. General Assembly next month to highlight its role as an important global stakeholder. The 75th session of the assembly is scheduled to convene Sept. 15 in New York, with the general debate set to take place Sept. 22-26 and Sept. 29.
Taiwan’s diplomatic allies will voice their support during the event and send letters to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urging him to uphold the principle of inclusivity, the MOFA said.
The ministry thanked the country’s allies and like-minded partners for backing Taiwan’s bid to participate in the global body, adding the U.N. should quickly take action to herald a brighter, more inclusive and more sustainable post-pandemic future. (SFC-E)
