President Tsai Ing-wen said the government will continue strengthening the Employment Gold Card program in an effort to attract more top talent from abroad while deepening Taiwan’s engagement with the world.

EGC consultation services and publicity undertakings are prioritized for promotion by the National Development Council, Tsai said. Foreign professionals must be made better aware of the program and offered adequate assistance, she said.

Tsai made the remarks while meeting with outstanding EGC holders and presenting the 998th, 999th and 1,000th cards at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

According to the PO, card No. 998 was presented to Seamon Chan of the U.S., an investor helping Taiwan startups gain entry into international markets; No. 999 to Mustafa Ozgur Baydarol of Turkey, a cutting-edge technology inventor with 10 patents; and No. 1,000 to Rodney Dean Morgan of the U.S., an executive engaged in local semiconductor industry development.

Tsai said she was pleased to welcome all ECG holders, particularly the first recipient Steve Chen—co-founder of video sharing service YouTube. This wealth of talent underscores the appeal of the country as global supply chains are reorganized, she added.

Taiwan’s safe and investment-friendly environment, built on a foundation of freedom and democracy, is expected to attract an influx of multinational talent, Tsai said. This will enable the local industrial sector to become more internationalized, with the vision and capabilities necessary for greater global competitiveness, she added.

In addition, Tsai said, the country’s rich and diverse culture, as well as its ranking as best destination for expatriates in the latest survey by Germany-headquartered global expats network InterNations, will prove increasingly appealing going forward. In celebrating and enjoying these benefits, it is important for all to work together in making Taiwan better, she added. (YCH-E)
