Taiwan is participating in a Central American Integration System (SICA) forum aimed at advancing post-pandemic economic recovery throughout the region by spurring entrepreneurship, digital transformation and innovation, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Staged virtually Nov. 18-20, the event involves nearly 1,000 academics, experts and officials from SICA member states such as ROC (Taiwan) allies Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, as well as the Central American Bank for Economic Integration and Inter-American Development Bank. The third edition of the annual forum was organized by SICA’s Foundation to Promote the Competitiveness of Micro and Small Enterprise in Central America.
MOFA Vice Minister Miguel Li-jey Tsao addressed participants during the launch of the event, while Liu Yau-jr, vice president of Taipei University of Marine Technology, delivered a keynote speech titled “Digital Transformation: Opportunities in the New Normal.”
In a tweet on the MOFA’s official account, the ministry said “Vice Minister Tsao was honored to join in the launch of #SICAEMPRENDE 3.0 held by @sg_sica. He made it crystal clear #TaiwanCanHelp harness the power of digital transformation, entrepreneurship & innovation in building a more resilient post-#COVD19 economy for #CentralAmerica.”
The ministry said Taiwan regularly takes part in SICA cooperation projects on the basis of the principles of equality, reciprocity and mutual benefit. The government will continue deepening friendship with Taiwan’s allies and like-minded partners in Central America while playing a greater role in reginal development, the MOFA added.
Established in 1991, SICA is the primary institutional framework for regional integration in Central America. Taiwan was admitted as an extra-regional observer in January 2000. (YCH-E)
