The forthcoming two-day visit to Taiwan of a delegation led by U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Kelly Craft is sincerely welcomed by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Jan. 8.
Scheduled to arrive Jan. 13, Craft is set to meet President Tsai Ing-wen and MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, as well as deliver a speech at the Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs in Taipei City on Taiwan’s international participation.
According to the MOFA, Craft, the first incumbent U.S. ambassador to the U.N. to travel to Taiwan since 1971, has publicly called for Taiwan’s participation in the international governance system including the World Health Organization and International Civil Aviation Organization.
Strong Taiwan-U.S. ties form a rock-solid foundation on which the government can work to defend the international, rules-based order, the MOFA said. The visit will help reinforce the shared values of democracy, freedom and human rights, it added.
In a tweet on her official Twitter account, Tsai said Craft’s visit marks an important milestone in the bilateral partnership and proves Taiwan Can Help the international community.
According to the U.S. Mission to the U.N., Craft intends to reinforce Washington’s strong and ongoing support for Taiwan. She will also discuss Taiwan’s impressive contributions to the global community and the importance of its meaningful and expanded participation in international organizations. (SFC-E)
