Taiwan narrative artist Ray He has been selected as the artist-in-residence at Maison de la BD (House of Comics) in France’s Loire River region under a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture and the Blois-based organization, the MOC said April 12.

The artist won the honor with a collection of five short pieces focusing on ecological preservation. In addition to eye-catching images, her works evoke a sense of awe and responsibility for nature while highlighting the importance of cohabitation between humans and wildlife, the MOC said.

A graduate of the Department of Motion Pictures at National Taiwan University of Arts, Ray was nominated for Taiwan’s 2020 Golden Comic Awards for her first graphic novel “Intertidal,” a soul-searching journey about a Taiwan immigrant in the U.S. who struggles to fit in with Western society.

The Taipei-based artist will be subsidized for a round-trip ticket to France and all living expenses during her stay at Maison de la BD between November this year and February 2022. She will also have the opportunity to participate in the annual Angouleme International Comics Festival and BD BOUM Comics Festival.

Maison de la BD is one of Europe’s premier institutions for cultivating the next generation of comic artists. The residency is part of a collaboration that began in 2018, with previous winners including Stellina Chen and Ho Hsueh-yi, the MOC said. (SFC-E)
