Taiwan and Haiti celebrated the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations April 25 with a series of events staged independently in both countries out of respect for health concerns stemming from COVID-19.

The activities included the broadcast of TV programs produced by the Embassy of the ROC (Taiwan) in Haiti and the Caribbean country’s government, as well as a banquet held by the embassy of Haiti in Taiwan the same day in Taipei City.

In a special video message, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu praised the strength of bilateral relations and said Taiwan plays a key role in Haiti’s national development. This is evidenced by a raft of ongoing cooperative projects such as the establishment of electrical grid transmission and solar energy systems, he added.

Wu also took the opportunity to thank Haiti’s recently appointed interim Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Claude Joseph for Haiti’s rock solid support of Taiwan in the international arena. The country will continue sharing its know-how and resources in assisting the Caribbean nation combat coronavirus while strengthening the global response to the pandemic, he said.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said “Watch Minister Wu’s message celebrating the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between #Taiwan & #Haiti. Our countries are true friends & partners in prosperity, bound by a shared belief in the power of friendship & cooperation to build brighter futures for the people.”

The MOFA also tweeted a response to Haiti President Jovenel Moise’s congratulatory tweet. “We warmly thank @moisejovenel for the genuine message of friendship & solidarity. The government & people of #Taiwan truly treasure bilateral ties with #Haiti, & are fully committed to advancing the long-standing & successful relationship for the benefit of both countries.”

According to the MOFA, Taiwan and Haiti established diplomatic relations in 1956. The countries share a long history of fruitful collaboration in projects spanning education, energy, environmental protection, infrastructure and public health. (YCH-E)
