President Tsai Ing-wen received winners of the inaugural Girls in Cybersecurity Award at the Presidential Office May 4 in Taipei City, spotlighting the government’s dedication to fostering young talent as part of efforts to build Taiwan into a digital country.

The government is fully committed to developing dependable information security systems and related supply chains while enhancing the country’s digital competitiveness, the president said.

Such a tremendous task will not be accomplished without top-notch professionals, Tsai said, adding that the government plans to offer even more resources and support in order to expand Taiwan’s skill pool.

Tsai also commended the Ministry of Science and Technology for organizing the award. The milestone competition will inspire more female students to pursue related careers in science and technology, especially cybersecurity, she said.

According to the president, cybersecurity has been a top priority since she first took office in 2016. As the world enters the Internet of Things and 5G telecommunication era, it has become a matter of national security Tsai added.

To strengthen defenses, the president said the government is planning to establish a digital development ministry to coordinate related policymaking and spearhead public-private collaboration.

Praising the winners as invaluable future leaders, Tsai encouraged them to think outside the box and engage in interdisciplinary study going forward. The government will work hand in hand with the country’s most brilliant minds to help them fulfill their potential, she said. (SFC-E)
