A resolution adopted by the French Senate in support of Taiwan’s international participation is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs May 7.
Passed the day before in a 304-0 vote with 19 abstentions, the resolution calls on the French government to continue its support for Taiwan’s participation in agencies like International Civil Aviation Organization, Interpol, U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change and World Health Assembly.
Proposed in March by Alain Richard and Joel Guerriau, chair and vice chair of the French Senate’s Taiwan Friendship Group, respectively, the resolution also commends Taiwan for its success in combating COVID-19 and promoting economic development.
The resolution correctly states that Taiwan’s exclusion from international organizations runs counter to the interests of global society, the MOFA said. This point was echoed by Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, secretary of state at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, while reaffirming backing of Taiwan’s participation by France.
Such support for Taiwan and recognition of its contribution to global society by the French government’s executive and legislative branches are warmly welcomed, the MOFA said.
The two sides share a longstanding partnership characterized by a high level of trust, the MOFA said, adding that bilateral cooperation will continue apace in areas spanning economy, energy, innovation, science and technology and trade.
Taiwan is committed to working with France and other like-minded partners in expanding exchanges, deepening friendship and demonstrating Taiwan Can Help, the MOFA added. (SFC-E)
