Vice President Lai Ching-te reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ health May 12 after the Cabinet-level Central Epidemic Command Center confirmed community transmission of COVID-19 in Taiwan.

The country’s health care workers are steadfast in their dedication to ensuring the health and well-being of the people, Lai said. Specialist staffers are on hand to provide any patients with rapid diagnosis and the best treatment available in order to contain the spread of coronavirus, he added.

Lai made the remarks while attending a COVID-19 response meeting hosted at the Taiwan Medical Association in Taipei City.

Other high-profile attendees at the event included Chiu Tai-Yuan, president of the Taiwan Medical Association; Kao Ching-chiu, president of the Taiwan Union of Nurses Association; and Lin Yung-zen, president of the ROC Primary Care Association.

According to Lai, solidarity and public cooperation with the government’s disease management protocols are the keys to tackling community transmission. Target priority groups for COVID-19 vaccination should also book an appointment as soon as possible, he added.

Latest CECC statistics reveal 1,256 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Taiwan and 12 deaths, with 142 patients still receiving treatment at hospitals countrywide. (DL-E)
