The founder of Taiwan nonprofit organization Little Red Hood was named winner of a 2021 Diana Award in the U.K. June 28, according to the awarding organization.

Lin Wei was one of over 300 young people from around the world who received the honor this year for their humanitarian efforts. The ceremony was held virtually in the lead-up to what would have been the 60th birthday of the late Princess Diana, in whose memory the award was founded.

According to the organizers, Lin was honored for her efforts toward promoting menstrual equity and eliminating period poverty in Taiwan. Lin raised approximately US$137,000 in 2021 to fund period education materials, training programs for social workers who work with teenage girls experiencing period poverty, monthly sanitary products for at least 500 girls, menstrual education training programs for teachers and school nurses, and social movements to eliminate period stigma.

Taipei City-based LRH will continue doing all it can to create a better, more equitable future for women in Taiwan, Lin said. That is the best way to demonstrate our appreciation and stay true to the values Diana believed in, she added.

Launched in 1999 by the U.K. government, the Diana Award is dedicated to continuing the princess’s legacy through formally recognizing young people aged 9-25 who go above and beyond the expected in their local communities. (DL-E)
