Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu congratulated Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre of St. Lucia on taking office during a special phone call Aug. 3 with the leader of the Caribbean ally and senior officials.

During the friendly and warm conversation, Wu thanked Pierre on behalf of President Tsai Ing-wen for St. Lucia’s consistent support of Taiwan in the international arena. He urged the prime minister to continue standing with the country going forward.

Wu, who invited the prime minister to lead a delegation to Taiwan when the COVID-19 situation stabilizes, said he looks forward to visiting St. Lucia again in the future. Pierre led a delegation to Taiwan in 2012 while serving as deputy prime minister between 2011 and 2016.

In response, Pierre thanked Tsai and Taiwan for assisting in St. Lucia’s infrastructure development and coronavirus-combating efforts. He also expressed an interest in advancing numerous cooperation projects as part of a broader commitment to deepening friendship and expanding exchanges between the countries.

In a tweet on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official Twitter account, Wu said “Truly wonderful to talk with @PhilipJPierreLC. I’m impressed by the PM’s vision for #StLucia, & #Taiwan is excited to partner in its realization. Our countries share a great friendship founded on the values of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights & the rule of law.”

According to the MOFA, Pierre was sworn in as prime minister July 29 after his St. Lucia Labour Party won 13 of the 17 elected seats in the House of Assembly during the general elections held three days earlier.

St. Lucia is a key partner for Taiwan in the Caribbean, the ministry said. Building on this friendly and solid foundation, the government will continue collaborating with Pierre and his administration in strengthening bilateral collaboration to advance sustainable development and inclusive prosperity for the benefit of the people, the MOFA added.
