The 2021 Michelin Guide Taipei and Taichung was unveiled Aug. 25, with one local restaurant receiving the coveted three stars, eight establishments earning two stars and 25 eateries landing one star.

Highlighting Taiwan’s culinary diversity and creative excellence, the 34 Michelin-starred restaurants offer a wide selection of cuisines including Cantonese, French, Japanese and Taiwanese. The list includes four new additions and four promotions from the previous year.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Minister of Transportation and Communications Wang Kwo-tsai attributed the increase in the number of venues earning the internationally renowned certification to Taiwan’s strong food culture, describing local fare as delicious, dynamic and of high quality.

Other prominent participants at the event included TB Director-General Chang Shi-chung and General Manager of Michelin Taiwan Jay Mao.

Wang also took the opportunity to thank local chefs for funneling their creativity into reinventing takeout meals during the COVID-19 pandemic, further showcasing the vitality and vibrancy of Taiwan’s food scene.

In a statement, the Michelin Guide announced that Le Palais, located at the Palais de Chine Hotel in Taipei City, maintained its three-star rating and was the only establishment in the guide to join the prestigious club of three-star restaurants, which numbers just over 100 globally. Michelin was impressed by Le Palais’ signature Cantonese dishes including crispy roasted duck and white gourd stuffed with shrimp and crab meat.

A total of 246 establishments were recommended in the 2021 Michelin Guide Taipei and Taichung, including 91 eateries earning Bib Gourmand selections. The publication is famous for awarding one to three stars in recognition of “high-quality cooking, worth a stop,” “excellent cooking, worth a detour” and “exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey,” in that order.
