A biennial Asian art exhibition aimed at enhancing public awareness of changes sparked by globalization is set to kick off Oct. 30 in the central city of Taichung, according to a recent statement by the Ministry of Culture.

The event, staged at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, features installations, paintings, photography, sculptures and videos by 38 artists and groups from 15 countries and territories.

Organized by Taiwan-based Japanese curator Nobuo Takamori in collaboration with Anushka Rajendran from India, Ho Yu-kuan from Taiwan, Tessa Maria Guazon from the Philippines and Thanavi Chotpradit from Thailand, this year’s edition utilizes the theme of futurism and sci-fi culture to explore the region’s past and present.

Artistic talents spotlighted at the event include Gan Siong-king of Malaysia, Genevieve Chua of Singapore, Hung Tung-lu and Joyce Ho of Taiwan, Kim Ayoung of South Korea, Kimura Tsunehisa of Japan, Lim Sokchanlina of Cambodia, Monira Al Qadiri of Kuwait, Sharbendu De from India and UuDam Tran Nguyen of Vietnam.

According to NTMFA Director Liang Yung-fei, the biennial serves as an important platform for bringing together a diverse selection of Asian contemporary art while bolstering cultural exchanges among artists from across the Indo-Pacific.

Other activities scheduled as part of the exhibition running through March 6 next year include artist-led seminars and screenings.(DL-E)
