The 26th Taiwan-Australia Joint Energy and Minerals, Trade and Investment Cooperation Consultations was staged Sept. 7 via videoconference, spotlighting the like-minded partners’ commitment to fostering mutually beneficial ties, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
Co-hosted by Yu Cheng-wei, director general of the MOEA’s Bureau of Energy, and David Laurence and Martin Squire, general managers of Australia’s Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, the event involved 73 academics, business representatives, experts and officials. Topics discussed included energy policy, with a focus on hydrogen power development and how to achieve the goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
MOEA Deputy Minister Tseng Wen-sheng said during the event that Australia is a rock-solid partner who can help Taiwan achieve energy security. The consultations also show the great importance both sides place on deepening cooperation amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.
Sean Sullivan, deputy secretary of Australia’s Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, said the high-level consultations are further proof that the two sides are determined to expand exchanges in the energy and minerals sectors.
First held in 1993, the consultations serve as a platform for Taiwan and Australia to initiate bilateral projects and examine progress in the energy and minerals sectors, according to the MOEA. (YCH-E)
