President Tsai Ing-wen reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and democratic way of life Sept. 10.
According to Tsai, the government is leaving no stone unturned in bolstering Taiwan’s self-defense. This is evidenced by last month’s establishment of a mobility squadron aimed at strengthening the country’s asymmetrical warfare capabilities as well as the Han Kuang military exercise planned for next week, she added.
Tsai made the remarks while inspecting a production center of the ROC (Taiwan) Armaments Bureau, Air Force Air Defense and Missile Command and Navy Fleet Command in central Taiwan’s Taichung City.
Other officials in attendance during the visit included David Tawei Lee, secretary-general to the president; Chiu Kuo-cheng, minister of defense; and Chen Pao-yu, chief of the general staff of the Staff Headquarters of the Armed Forces.
Tsai also saluted Taiwan’s military officers and soldiers for their contributions to the country’s enhanced epidemic prevention measures and disaster response.
The president said it is her responsibility to provide members of the military with the latest equipment and dignified accommodation befitting their crucial duties to society. Great progress is being made in this regard through regular refurbishment of dormitories and development of the national defense industry, she added.
Tsai also took the opportunity to offer her gratitude to service personnel and their family members for their sacrifice in being apart from loved ones during the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival falling Sept. 21 this year on the 15th day of the eighth month in the lunar calendar. (DL-E)
