President Tsai Ing-wen awarded Oct. 7 Alain Richard, chair of the French Senate’s Taiwan Friendship Group, the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon for contributions to strengthening Taiwan-France relations.
Richard is a pioneer in expanding bilateral exchanges over the past few years, Tsai said. Examples include his support in the Senate for inviting members of Taiwan’s Legislature to visit France in 2019, and a resolution adopted in May backing Taiwan’s international participation—the first pro-Taiwan bill passed by the legislative body to date, she added.
According to Tsai, Taiwan and France enjoy a strong partnership in technology and trade. The government is sparing no effort in cooperating closely with the EU member state, especially industrial development, she said.
Tsai also took the opportunity to thank France for stressing the importance of cross-strait peace and stability on the global stage. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan is committed to working with the fellow force for good in building a more secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific and world, she added.
In response, Richard dedicated the honor to all members of the French Senate who backed the friendship group’s five-day visit to Taiwan. France stands with Taiwan, like many other countries, due to its contributions in economic development, application of health care technology and world peace, he said.
Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, who also attended the ceremony, said in a tweet on the MOFA’s official Twitter account “It’s an honor to accompany @iingwen in decorating Alain Richard, chair of the French @Senat International Relations Committee.
