Taiwan is committed to achieving an open government and an open parliament while strengthening partnership with members of the democratic world, according to President Tsai Ing-wen Dec. 1.

Since taking office in May 2016, the president and her administration have implemented a raft of measures to improve administrative transparency and promote civic participation, Tsai said. In 2021, the Legislative Yuan initiated the Open Parliament Action Plan, while the Executive Yuan also launched the Open Government National Action Plan, she added.

Tsai made the remarks while receiving delegates to the Open Parliament Forum underway until Dec. 3 from Belize, Mexico and the U.S.

The president, who took the opportunity to convey her congratulations to Belize on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan on the 40th anniversary of its independence, said the government looks forward to expanding partnership across a broad spectrum of areas with the Central American ally.

Tsai also welcomed further opportunities to strengthen bilateral ties with Mexico. If Taiwan’s bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership is successful, trade and economic cooperation with the CPTPP member country can be bolstered, especially in the areas of Internet of Things, Industry 4.0 and renewable energy, she added.

Taiwan-U.S. relations are going from strength to strength, the president said. This is evidenced by the second Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue, wrapped up last week, and the Digital Economy Forum scheduled to be held next year, she added.

Tsai took the opportunity to thank the visiting parliamentarians for supporting Taiwan and working to advance exchange between the countries.

Among the members of the delegations are Derek Mitchell, president of the U.S.-headquartered nonprofit National Democratic Institute; Nadia Acevedo, senator of Mexico; and Valerie Woods, speaker of Belize’s House of Representatives. (DL-E)
