Unanimous approval of a U.K.-Taiwan friendship and cooperation motion by the British House of Commons is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Feb. 11.
The motion followed a debate proposed by Bob Stewart and Alicia Kearns, members of parliament and co-chairs of British-Taiwanese All-Party Parliamentary Group and U.K.-based China Research Group, respectively, the MOFA said. It urges the U.K. government to strengthen two-way trade, deepen security cooperation and support Taiwan’s standing in the global community, the ministry added.
Amanda Milling, minister for Asia in the U.K.’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, also took part in the debate, the MOFA said. She highlighted the U.K. government’s backing of Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations on the strength of its democracy and free market status, as well as the importance of cross-strait peace and stability, the ministry added.
The MOFA said Milling further welcomed Taiwan’s bilingual policy and expressed the U.K.’s intent to advance bilateral cooperation across a broad spectrum of areas, including green energy, semiconductors, trade and technology, the ministry added.
In a tweet on the MOFA’s official account, the ministry said “Impassioned support from @aliciakearns during the #UK-#Taiwan friendship & cooperation debate in the @HouseofCommons!
