A shipment of 27 tons of medical supplies is on its way to Ukraine, underscoring government support for the east European country in its time of need, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said March 1.

Organized by the MOFA in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Welfare and Customs Administration under the Ministry of Finance, the shipment departed Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport late Feb. 28. It will be handed over to Ukraine through proper channels after landing at Frankfurt Airport, the ministry added

According to the MOFA, more than 300,000 people have already fled Ukraine, with the U.N. estimating there are 7 million Ukrainian nationals who have been displaced since the Russian invasion began Feb. 24 and 18 million will need assistance as the military operation continues.

As a responsible member of the global democratic community, the government is committed to demonstrating that Taiwan Can Help Ukraine by supplying much-needed humanitarian aid, the ministry said.

In a tweet on the MOFA’s official Twitter account, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said “We #StandWithUkraine by sending 27 tons of medical supplies. While #China sides with #Russia in an “unlimited alliance,” #Taiwan is with freedom & democracy fighting the expansion of authoritarianism. I have faith: Democracy will prevail!” (SFC-E)
