Support for Taiwan stated by U.K. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss during a Mansion House speech at the Lord Mayor of London’s Easter Banquet is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs April 28.

Truss said Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine underscores the need for a new approach melding hard and economic security. This should be one building stronger global alliances where free nations are more assertive and self-confident, one that recognizes geopolitics is back, she added.

“NATO must have a global outlook, ready to tackle global threats,” Truss said. “We need to preempt threats in the Indo-Pacific, working with our allies like Japan and Australia to ensure the Pacific is protected.

“And we must ensure that democracies like Taiwan are able to defend themselves.”

The MOFA said Truss’ remarks highlight the importance the U.K. places on peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, as well as the security of the Indo-Pacific. Other examples include Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s remarks at the Munich Security Conference in February and joint statements he issued with leaders of the Group of Seven nations last year, the ministry added.

The government will continue working with fellow forces for good like the EU, Japan, U.K. and U.S. in ensuring peace, prosperity and stability in the Taiwan Strait and throughout the region, the MOFA said. At the same time, every effort is to be made in deepening friendship and expanding exchanges between Taiwan and like-minded partners around the world, the ministry added.

In a tweet on the MOFA’s official account, the ministry said “Our sincere thanks to @trussliz for choosing to #StandWithTaiwan. The #UK foreign secretary's strategy of ensuring ‘democracies like #Taiwan are able to defend themselves’ gives the country confidence as it faces #China’s encroaching authoritarianism.” (DL-E)
