Taiwan will donate 500,000 euros to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to assist the state-run post office and delivery companies to maintain their operations in Ukraine, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs April 28.

Kelly Wu-chiao Hsieh, head of Taipei Representative Office in the U.K., and Ines Rocha, managing director for EBRD’s Impact and Partnerships, formalized the provision during a signing ceremony earlier in the day in London. Sweden is also a donor to this project.

According to the MOFA, the donation is to maintain the East European country’s cross-border delivery capability and ensure the supply of critical humanitarian aid to the people. It is part of the EBRD’s project to assist those suffering in the war in Ukraine, the ministry added.

The donation also demonstrates that the people of Taiwan care for and stand with Ukraine, the MOFA said, adding that the government will continue to contribute more to assist the East European country.

Taiwan and EBRD have been working closely to assist Ukraine in technological, economic and social transformation and development for years, the MOFA said. This is evidenced by cooperation projects in areas spanning sustainable agriculture, urban planning, legal reform and nurturing personnel, the ministry added.

As a responsible member of the global democratic community, Taiwan will continue to work with like-minded partners and international organizations to combat authoritarian expansion, the MOFA said, adding that timely assistance to Ukraine encapsulates the Taiwan Can Help mindset.

Established in 1991, EBRD fosters the transition to market-oriented economies and promotes private and entrepreneurial initiatives. It has invested over 160 billion euros in more than 6,000 projects across three continents.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “#Taiwan #Sweden & @EBRD are teaming up to #StandWithUkraine. @Taiwan_in_UK Rep. Hsieh & @ebrdInes concluded a 500K euros donation enabling critically important cross-border & domestic delivery operations to continue amid #Russia’s war against #Ukraine.
