The government is committed to safeguarding Taiwan’s freedom and democracy by enhancing indigenous defense capabilities while expanding cooperation with like-minded partners worldwide, according to Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s threatening behavior towards Taiwan share a number of similarities, Wu said. The country is drawing lessons from Ukraine’s successful resistance, including the importance of asymmetrical capabilities and civil defense, he added.

Wu made the remarks during an exclusive interview with Fareed Zakaria of CNN’s Global Public Square May 1 in Taipei City.

According to Wu, numerous resolutions passed in support of Taiwan as well as visits by politicians from several European countries since the beginning of last year demonstrate the importance placed on Taiwan’s geopolitical position. Fellow democracies around the world are paying greater attention to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait as they stand more united than ever against authoritarianism, he added.

Following Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion, a high-level U.S. delegation was sent by the Biden administration to Taiwan, underscoring its unwavering commitment to Taiwan, Wu said.

In a series of tweets on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Watch Minister Wu’s exclusive interview with @FareedZakaria via @CNN’s ‘Global Public Square.’ They discuss the lessons #Taiwan is drawing from #Russia’s invasion of #Ukraine, the importance of the country continuing to strengthen relations…with like-minded partners around the globe, more & more backing from fellow democracies, rock-solid #US support of #Taiwan under the Biden administration & the need for #Beijing to ‘pause & think twice’ before taking action against the country.” (DL-E)
