President Tsai Ing-wen said May 5 that Taiwan is cooperating closely with St. Lucia in deepening friendship and expanding exchanges across a broad spectrum of potential-laden areas.

The government is leaving no stone unturned in partnering with Prime Minister Philip Joseph Pierre and his government, Tsai said. Over the past few years, Taiwan and St. Lucia have successfully teamed up in key sectors such as agriculture, education, public health, and youth and women’s empowerment, she added.

Tsai made the remarks while accepting the credentials of Robert Kennedy Lewis, St. Lucia’s new ambassador to Taiwan, at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. Lewis is a former Cabinet minister holding the education portfolio, as well as a member of the House of Assembly in the parliament of the Caribbean ally.

According to Tsai, bilateral cooperation projects she witnessed firsthand during her visit to St. Lucia during the Journey of Freedom, Democracy, Sustainability in July 2019 are creating new opportunities for the people. Some of the standouts include the banana export collection center and reconstruction of the St. Jude Hospital, she said.

Tsai also took the opportunity to thank Pierre and St. Lucia for staunchly supporting Taiwan at last year’s U.N. General Assembly. This backing of the country’s international participation is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, she said. (DL-E)
