The communique containing support for Taiwan by the foreign ministers of the leading industrial nations is welcomed and appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Issued following the Group of Seven foreign ministers’ meeting May 12 to 14 in Weisennhaus, the communique states “We underscore the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and encourage the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues.

“We also support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the World Health Assembly and WHO technical meetings. The international community should be able to benefit from the experience of all partners.”

The communique is the second time since 2021 the G-7 foreign ministers have backed Taiwan, the MOFA said, adding that it come in the run-up to the 75th edition of the WHA—the decision-making body of the World Health Organization—taking place May 22 to 28 in Geneva.

WHA75 is the first physical gathering of the annual event attended by delegations from all WHO member states since the onset of COVID-19.

Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is now a focal point in the region and around the world, the MOFA said, citing similar high-profile statements released after the G-7 Leaders’ Summit, U.S.- EU Summit, Japan-Australia 2+2 Foreign and Defense Ministerial Consultations, France-Australia Foreign and Defense 2+2 Ministerial Consultations, EU-Japan Summit and U.S.-EU Consultations between European External Action Service Secretary General Stefano Sannino and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.

As a responsible Indo-Pacific country, Taiwan will continue working with like-minded partners such as the G-7 to deepen collaboration based on shared democratic principles, strengthen the resilience of the global democratic alliance and ensure regional peace, stability, prosperity and global health security in the post-pandemic era, the ministry said.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “We welcome & highly appreciate the @G7 foreign ministers' communique underscoring the importance of peace & stability across the Taiwan Strait, encouraging the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues, & supporting #Taiwan’s participation in the WHA & @WHO technical meetings.” (DL-E)
