Taiwan-U.S. relations have gone from strength to strength with the visit of Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Aug. 3.

Pelosi, who led a U.S. congressional delegation that visited Taiwan Aug. 2-3, met with President Tsai Ing-wen and received the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon. She attended a luncheon hosted by Tsai, with participants including Vice President Lai Ching-te, Premier Su Tseng-chang, National Security Council Secretary-General Koo Li-hsiung, MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, Minister of National Defense Chiu Kuo-cheng and Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua.

She additionally met with Tsai Chi-chang, deputy speaker of the Legislative Yuan, and cross-party lawmakers; visited New Taipei City-based National Human Rights Museum; and participated in a forum involving Chen Chu, president of the Control Yuan and chair of the National Human Rights Commission, as well as representatives of civic organizations.

According to the MOFA, Pelosi said on many occasions during her stay that the visit demonstrated the U.S. government’s unwavering support for Taiwan. The U.S. has made a bedrock promise to stand with Taiwan since the enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act 43 years ago, she said, adding that the two sides have built a thriving partnership and are deepening cooperation in areas spanning economics, security and good governance.

Pelosi also took the opportunity to congratulate Taiwan for its successful response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The staunch support and rock-solid friendship from the U.S. shown by Pelosi’s visit during an uncertain time is deeply appreciated, the MOFA said. The government is committed to strengthening partnership with the U.S. in fields like security and trade while working with like-minded partners to safeguard cross-strait peace and stability and a free and open Indo-Pacific, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Minister Wu accompanied @iingwen as she awarded @SpeakerPelosi a state honor for supporting our country. He then joined the president & congressional delegation in a celebration of freedom & democracy at #Taipei Guest House. #Taiwan-#US ties are rock solid & built to last!” (YCH-E)
