A concert showcasing pieces by Lithuanian composers was staged by Taipei City-based National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Sept. 25 in Vilnius, spotlighting the government’s commitment to spurring interest in the fine arts while conveying the country’s hopes for world peace.
Jointly organized by NTSO and Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society with support from the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs, the concert featured performances by violinist Robert Chen and a 20-member string ensemble. Attendees included high-ranking officials from the two sides, Lithuanian academics and members of prominent Ukrainian groups.
A highlight of the program was “Svajone,” or “The Dream,” by Lithuanian composer Juozas Naujalis. The work celebrates Lithuania’s independence and freedom and is intended to pass along good wishes to Ukrainian refugees displaced by Russia’s invasion, the MOC said.
Other pieces included “Divertimento in D Major, K. 136” by W.A. Mozart, “Rondo in A Major for Violin and Strings, D. 438” by F. Schubert, “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” by A. Piazzolla, “Plum Blossoms” by Taiwan composer Chen Shih-hui and folk songs from Taiwan and Lithuania.
According to NTSO Director and Conductor Liu Suan-yung, the interviews and reports covering the concert released by Lithuanian media outlets have demonstrated the importance the Baltic state attaches to the Taiwan group’s visit. NTSO will invite LNPS’s symphony orchestra to visit the country while seeking opportunities to work with its choir in the future, he added.
The concert was part of NTSO’s Sept. 22-26 European tour, with other stops in Vienna, Austria, and Kaunas, Lithuania. (YCH-E)
