Support from the global community for Taiwan’s bid to participate in the activities, mechanisms and meetings of the U.N. is sincerely appreciated by the government of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sept. 27.
Ahead of the 77th U.N. General Assembly Sept. 13-27 in New York City amid the escalation of China’s military threats, the government launched a campaign conveying the wishes of Taiwan’s 23.5 million people to take part in the global body, the MOFA said.
According to the MOFA, nine heads of government, one foreign minister and one charge d’affaires of the permanent mission to the U.N. from Taiwan’s allies spoke for the country during the assembly. Other nations’ representatives and parliamentarians, including members of the European Parliament, Europe’s Formosa Club and the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China also expressed their backing through various means, the MOFA said.
Top-level officials from like-minded partners stressed the importance of maintaining cross-strait peace and stability, the MOFA said, citing remarks made by U.S. President Joe Biden, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavsky of the Czech Republic and the European Council President Charles Michel. A joint statement issued by the Group of Seven’s foreign ministers and the EU high representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy reiterated the same concept.
Responses to the campaign for UN inclusion have been strong, with an op-ed by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu urging the U.N. not to submit to China’s pressure in distorting its Resolution 2758 reported on 202 times by major media outlets from countries such as Belize, Canada, Denmark, Eswatini, France, Honduras, Lithuania, South Korea, Spain, Ukraine, the EU and the U.S. A short film made by the ministry titled “Taiwan’s Helping Hand,” which spotlights how Taiwan Can Help realize U.N. Sustainable Development Goals has garnered 10.23 million views since its release.
In UN inclusion-related activities, on Sept. 19, President Tsai Ing-wen delivered a video address to the 2022 Concordia Annual Summit, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to fostering cross-sector partnerships for social impact that holds the largest convening alongside the UNGA. Tsai emphasized that securing Taiwan’s democracy is imperative to ensuring freedom and human rights for the global collective future.
The government remains resolute in its determination to take part in global organizations based on professional, pragmatic and constructive principals, the MOFA said, adding that Taiwan continues to work with the democratic world to curb authoritarian expansion and safeguard rules-based international order.
