Taiwan is rated 11th out of 63 major economies in the latest World Digital Competitiveness Ranking released Sept. 28 by Switzerland-based International Institute for Management Development.

Economies were ranked using 54 criteria under the categories of Knowledge, Technology and Future Readiness. Among the benchmarks in the first category, which measures a country’s ability to acquire new technologies, Taiwan remained at the top in total R&D personnel per capita and third in both higher education achievement and total expenditure on R&D.

In Technology, which evaluates digital innovation capabilities, Taiwan continued to lead in both mobile broadband subscribers and IT and media stock market capitalization. It also moved up two spots to third in high-tech exports.

With regard to Future Readiness, which assesses progress in digital transformation, Taiwan advanced two places to second in use of big data and analytics and stayed at third in agility of companies.

According to the Ministry of Digital Affairs, the results spotlight success in government efforts to promote digital infrastructure development, along with related R&D and applications, as the nation continues to make strides in digital transformation.

The rankings will serve as reference for future policymaking aiming to bolster Taiwan’s digital operational capacities and strengthen the country’s global competitiveness, the ministry added.

First launched in 2017, the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking measures the capabilities and readiness of major economies to explore and adopt digital technologies as a key driver of economic transformation in business, government and wider society. (SFC-E)
