A hybrid workshop on the challenges and strategies for the industrialization of smart agriculture was staged under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework Sept. 27-28 in Taipei City, underscoring the government’s commitment to sharing its expertise with partners in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
The event was co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Taipei-based Food and Fertilizer Technology Center for the Asian and Pacific Region, Hsinchu City-based Agricultural Technology Research Institute, the American Institute in Taiwan, Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, Australian Office Taipei, Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei and Netherlands Office Taipei.
The two-day event brought together over 50 officials and experts in Taipei, while nearly 300 individuals from 40 plus countries took part online. High-profile participants included Tuvalu Amb. Bikenibeu Paeniu, AIT Deputy Director Jeremy Cornforth, JTEA Chief Deputy Rep. Takashi Hattori, AOT Deputy Rep. Michael Googan and NLOT Director Guido Tielman.
According to the MOFA, participants focused their discussions on the applications of information communication technology and digital innovation to develop smart agriculture.
In addition to sharing their respective experiences, the organizing parties also proposed the establishment of a GCTF smart agriculture alliance to further information exchanges and formulate development guidelines for global applications, the ministry added.
Launched in June 2015 by Taiwan and the U.S. as a platform for multi-lateral cooperation among like-minded partners, GCTF has hosted 51 workshops for over 5,500 participants from around 100 countries and territories. Since 2021, GCTF-affiliated events have also been held overseas to deepen cooperation in Africa, Europe, South Asia and the Caribbean. (SFC-E)
