The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed sincere appreciation from the government and people for two policy implementation reports adopted Nov. 30 by the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee that call for closer relations with Taiwan and reaffirm commitment to cross-strait peace and stability.

The Common Foreign and Security Policy report stresses that Taiwan is a key EU partner and a democratic friend in the Indo-Pacific. It urges the European Commission and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to establish strategic cooperation with Taiwan.

The countries involved should further high-level exchanges in areas spanning culture, economics and science, it said, calling on EU authorities to launch impact assessment, public consultation and scoping exercises on a bilateral investment agreement, deepen collaboration on supply chain resilience, and jointly combat disinformation and external interference.

In addition, the CFSP strongly advocates that the EU and its member states strengthen partnership with other like-minded partners to safeguard Taiwan’s freedom and democracy and its meaningful international participation.

The Common Security and Defense Policy report expresses concern over China’s continued military maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait and opposes to any unilateral action to change the cross-strait status quo. It called on Beijing to stop moves endangering regional stability and impacting European prosperity.

According to the MOFA, the two policy reports demonstrate the committee’s staunch support for Taiwan and its 23 million people. The reports will be voted on at the EP in Strasbourg next January, the ministry said, adding that Taiwan will continue expanding collaboration with the EU and its member states while deepening partnership based on shared values of freedom and democracy.
