President Tsai Ing-wen said Dec. 2 that the government is committed to contributing even more to global public health and medical care to ensure wellness and safety for all.
To this end, Taiwan is strengthening cooperation with like-minded nongovernmental organizations such as the World Medical Association, Tsai said. This is evidenced by the country’s deep and long-standing ties with the association, she added.
Tsai made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the WMA. Led by Osahon Enabulele, president of the association, the group includes the organization’s Chairperson of Council Frank Ulrich Montgomery and Secretary General Otmar Kloiber.
Tsai took the opportunity to thank the WMA for backing Taiwan and its participation in the World Health Organization, citing a resolution passed by the association last October in support of the country’s observer status in the WHO and its affiliated mechanisms.
According to Tsai, passage of the resolution not only reflects international recognition of Taiwan’s expertise in public health and medicine, but also inspires the country’s people.
Earlier in the day, Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu received the delegation at the MOFA headquarters in Taipei City. The minister commended the medical and humanitarian assistance the organization provided to Ukraine following the Russian invasion of the Eastern European country. (DL-E)
