A delegation from Spain’s Congress of Deputies commenced a five-day visit to Taiwan Jan. 10 aimed at deepening bilateral ties and expanding exchanges across the board.

Led by Rosa Romero Sanchez, president of the Congress of Deputies' Health Commission, the group includes fellow lawmakers Ivan Espinosa, Jaime De Olano, Jose Angel Alonso, Juan Diego Requena and Ricardo Tarno Blanco. The delegation’s itinerary includes meetings with Legislative Yuan President You Si-kun and Vice Premier Shen Jong-chin, as well as a banquet hosted by Deputy Foreign Minister Tsai Ming-yen.

Other highlights include visits to the Cabinet-level Mainland Affairs Council, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Hsinchu Science Park.

According to the MOFA, a statement expressing concern over cross-strait tensions was passed Oct. 6 by the Spanish Congress of Deputies’ Foreign Affairs Commission, which is the first time in nearly 50 years a pro-Taiwan statement was passed by the lower house of the legislative branch.

The delegation’s visit is the first by a congressional delegation from the EU member state since November 2019, the MOFA said, adding that the government will continue to work with countries in Europe, including Spain, to jointly promote security across the Taiwan Strait as well as peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
