Economic cooperation between Taiwan and Lithuania is advancing apace, with the two sides announcing a raft of new breakthroughs in the partnership during a press conference Jan. 18 in Vilnius, the Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania said.
The event was attended by Rep. Eric Huang, Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas Viktorija Cmilte-Nielsen, Minister of the Economy and Innovation Ausrine Armonaite and Minister of Agriculture Kestutis Navickas, as well as other officials, political figures and business leaders from the EU member state.
According to the office, the government-sponsored Central and Eastern European Loan Fund will provide 8 million euros in financing to SoliTek, a producer of solar panels, while the Central and Eastern European Investment Fund will input 3.5 million euros into Oxipit, a developer of artificial intelligence tools for medical imaging.
Equally important, the office said Taiwan’s state-backed Industrial Technology and Research Institute will assist Lithuanian firm Teltonika Networks to develop semiconductor technologies and undertake training, with 10 million euros provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said in a recorded video message that Taiwan and Lithuania both stand on the front line of authoritarian expansion and share the same firm belief in freedom and democracy.
The pledge of 10 million euros serves as a great example of how members of the free world support each other in driving economic growth and building resilient democratic supply chains, Wu added.
Echoing Wu’s remarks, Huang said semiconductors are a key technology for the free world. As an industry leader, Taiwan is willing to enhance bilateral cooperation with Lithuania in this sector. He also announced that the government has given permission for import of beef products from Lithuania.
The office will continue to work with the EU member state on other mutually beneficial projects, the representative added. (SFC-E)
