June 16. Dr. Akiki Nyabanga, diplomatic advisor to the Uganda government, and Omara Ebek, director of the department of youth organization of the People's Congress Party of Uganda, arrive from Hongkong for a goodwill visit.

In a ceremony marking the 38th founding anniversary of the Military Academy, Vice President and Premier Chen Cheng reiterates the Chinese government's determination to recover the mainland.

17. Patrick Pichi Sun, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, supports U.S. President Kennedy's decision not to send food to the mainland unless ways can be found to assure that it reaches the hungry masses.

18. Vice President and Premier Chen Cheng officiates at a ground-breaking ceremony for construction of the National Palace Mu­seum.

Fu Yun, director of the Provincial Social Affairs Department announces 5,000 government housing units will be constructed during fiscal 1962-63.

President Chiang Kai-shek sends a message of congratulations to Chief of State Sheik Abdullah Al Salim Al Sabah of Kuwait on the occasion of the first anniversary of Kuwait's independence.

19. President Chiang Kai-shek designates General Chen Chia-shang as Chinese Air Force Commander-in-chief for a third term.

20. A 27-man Chinese mission leaves for Japan for a month's study of physical edu­cation.

Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shan, the Sultan of Selangor of the Federation of Malaya, and his wife arrive for a ten-day visit.

The Foreign Exchange and Trade Control Commission announces that the United States has notified the Embassy in Washington that all imports of cotton yarn from Taiwan will be banned beginning June 23.

21. The Free China Relief Association announces that China will begin evacuation of Chinese refugees from Hongkong to Taiwan within a week.

The Cultural Convention between the Republic of China and the Republic of El Salvador comes into force.

22. Patrick Pichi Sun, Foreign Ministry spokesman, declares that the Chinese government and the Free China Relief Association are taking steps for relief of Chinese refugees fleeing the mainland to Macao.

Liu Keh-shu, standing board member of the Bank of Communications, has been appoint­ed by the Ministry of Finance as bank chairman.

23. General Chiang Ching-kuo, chairman of the Vocational Assistance Commission for Retired Servicemen, says VACRS has provided rehabilitation for 120,972 veterans in the last seven years, including 1,136 evacuees from the Yunnan-Burma border.

Vice President and Premier Chen Cheng confirms that Chinese Communists have been massing ground and air forces along the coast facing Taiwan.

Pedro Cardoso, director of information and tourism of Portuguese Angola, extends an invitation to Chinese immigrants to help develop the Portuguese colony in southwest Africa.

24. The Legislative Yuan reads into law the Statute for Floatation of 1962-63 Short-Term Bonds totaling NT$600 million (US$15 million).

Upon establishment of the Laotian coalition government, Foreign Ministry spokesman Patrick Pichi Sun declares that the Chinese government wants to "continue and further strengthen the present relations of friendship and cooperation" with Laos.

A 12-member Chinese trade mission headed by Wilfred Ling of the Central Trust of China leaves for a four-week tour of Australia.

25. National Defense Minister Yu Ta-wei returns from an inspection tour of Kinmen and Matsu, and says morale on the offshore islands is high.

The Provincial Assembly approves an NT$5,740,407,885 (US$143 million) budget for the Provincial government for fiscal 1963.

The Provincial Department of Civic Affairs announces that Taiwan had a population of 11,270,845 at the end of April.

26. Communist artillery pieces in the coastal areas opposite Kinmen and Matsu fire 179 rounds against the offshore islands.

27. First group of 62 Chinese refugees who recently fled the Communist-held mainland to Hongkong arrive in Taiwan for resettlement.

28. Chinese Ambassador to Thailand Han Lih-wu is named concurrent Ambassador to Laos.

Yang Hsi-kun, director of the West Asiatic Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, leaves for Ruanda to participate in its independence ceremony July 1.

29. The Sino-Panamanian cultural pact comes into force with the exchange of ratification instruments.

Communist troops opposite Kinmen (Que­moy) stage an artillery bombardment exercise against the island.

Minister of Personnel Lei Fa-tsang says that the government employee insurance program, introduced in 1958, has benefited more than 214,000 persons.

President Chiang Kai-shek sends a message of felicitations to President Joseph Kasavubu of the Republic of the Congo (Leopoldville) on the occasion of the Congo's June 30 national day.

A three-man Italian trade mission headed by Augusto Torlonia of the Italian Foreign Trade Ministry arrives from Hongkong for a two-week observation tour.

30. Dr. Wei Yu-sun, former spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, leaves for the Republic of South Africa to assume his post as Chinese Consul-General in Johannesburg.

The Chinese government formally extends diplomatic recognition to Ruanda and Urundi, newly independent African nations.

Acting Taipei Mayor Chow Pai-lien presides over a ceremony marking the completion of the 3,949-meter Shuanyuan dike.

July 1. Fishermen throughout the nation celebrate their own day with rallies and feasts.

2. Retired Admiral Alan G. Kirk, newly appointed U. S. Ambassador to China, arrives in Taipei.

The first Summer Institute in Chinese Civilization for U. S. educators is opened at Tunghai University, Taichung.

3. Commodore Simeon Castro, commanding the Philippine Navy, arrives for a five-day visit.

President Chiang Kai-shek sends a message of felicitations to President John F. Kennedy on the occasion of Independence Day of the United States on July 4.

4. Patrick Pichi Sun, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, says the government has accepted Ou Voravong as Laotian Ambassador to China.

Australian Parliamentarian E. G. Wright arrives for a week's visit.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs says that investment applications by overseas Chinese and foreign investors have totaled US$79,180,000 since April, 1951.

President Chiang Kai-shek sends a message of felicitations to Venezuelan President Romulo Betancourt on the occasion of the Venezuelan national day July 5.

5. The Republic of China extends recognition to Algeria.

U. S. Ambassador Alan G. Kirk presents his credentials to President Chiang.

The U. S. Agency for International Development announces the appointment of Howard L. Parsons as Director of the AID Mission to China to succeed Wesley C. Haraldson.

The Chinese government elevates its lega­tion in Uruguay to the status of an embassy.

6. Patrick Pichi Sun, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, denounces the "two Chinas" theory, saying that any move by a free nation to recognize the Peiping regime will be con­sidered a "most unfriendly act" by the Republic of China.

Rear Admiral Pei Yu-fen, spokesman of the Ministry of National Defense, discloses that the Chinese Communists have redeployed more than 400,000 troops along the coastal areas of Fukien province opposite the offshore islands of Kinmen and Matsu.

7. Reports reaching Taiwan say many areas of the south Chinese mainland are flooded.

32,490 high school graduates take the joint entrance examination of universities and colleges.

8. President Chiang Kai-shek cables a message of felicitations to Argentine President Dr. Jose Maria Guido on the occasion of the Argentine national day July 9.

9. Vice President and Premier Chen Cheng says the government is well prepared and is confident of regaining the mainland.

An art exhibition sponsored by famous Chinese painters and calligraphers is opened to raise funds for the relief of Chinese refugees fleeing the mainland.

10. The Ministry of Economic Affairs an­nounces that its 10 public enterprises earned US$77,071,360 in foreign exchange during the last fiscal year.

11. The second group of 110 refugees from Hongkong and Macao arrives in Taiwan for resettlement.

In anticipation of a Communist attack, Chinese artillery units on Kinmen hold firing practice.

12. The Executive Yuan decides to switch the posts of Li Chin, ambassador to Colombia, and Li Chao, ambassador to the Dominican Re­public.

About 18,000 primary school pupils in Taipei take part in an entrance examination for middle schools.

Reports from Libya say the Chinese agricultural team in Libya is successfully operating a desert model farm to help improve farming techniques in that African country.

13. The government lodges a strong protest with the Laotian government against its admis­sion of a Chinese Communist "charge d'affaires" while maintaining diplomatic relations with the Republic of China.

K. Y. Yin, chairman of the Foreign Exchange and Trade Control Commission, declares that the government will not change its free trade policy nor the current foreign exchange rate of NT$40 to US$1.

14. The Legislative Yuan amends the Maritime Law promulgated in 1929.

15. Miss China Helen S. M. Liu wins fourth place in the Miss Universe contest at Miami.

Dr. Han Lih-wu, Chinese Ambassador to Laos, arrives in Vientiane.
