The Ministry of Education announced a digital stimulus voucher program July 8, highlighting government efforts to help Taiwan’s sports sectors get back on track in the post-pandemic new life.

To be entered into the voucher lottery, Taiwan nationals and foreign spouses of Taiwan citizens with residency must first register online July 20-26. Four million recipients will be selected July 28 to receive the one-time benefit worth NT$500 (US$17) to be used Aug. 1 through Dec. 31.

The vouchers can go toward sporting event tickets or purchases at shops approved by the MOE, the ministry said, adding that businesses included in Article 4 of the Sports Industry Development Act may apply to be included on the list of approved locations.

According to the act, any industry operators that offer products and services necessary for the public to engage in sports or promote the sector’s development are eligible to apply, including manufacturers and vendors of athletic apparel and equipment.

During a news conference in Taipei City, MOE Minister Pan Wen-chung said the ministry has allocated NT$2 billion from its sports development fund passed by the Legislature in 2016 for the program. The move is expected to rev up sports-related industries while encouraging citizens to take part in physical activities, he added.

Since the coronavirus outbreak started in late 2019, the government has launched a raft of economic measures which have benefited more than 10 million individuals hard hit by the pandemic. (YCH-E)
