The government is making good progress on tackling issues identified in the 2020 Taiwan White Paper produced by the American Chamber of Commerce, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs June 24.
A total of 13 issues raised in the paper are completely resolved, which is a record high in the publication’s 25-year history, the MOEA said. These include introducing regulations to require that intensive energy users obtain at least 10 percent of their power needs from renewable sources, it added.
In a statement, the MOEA said creating a more attractive investment environment is one of the ministry’s primary goals. The government appreciates recommendations made by foreign chambers of commerce in Taiwan and is proactively working on the suggestions outlined in this year’s edition of the AmCham report, it added.
The ministry’s statement follows the release June 23 of the 2021 edition of the white paper in which AmCham lauded the government for maintaining economic growth in 2020, showcasing a model of vibrant democratic governance and ably handling the COVID-19 pandemic while making generous donations of medical supplies to countries around the world.
AmCham also called on Washington to focus on the Taiwan Commercial Initiative as a six-track approach to bolstering U.S.-Taiwan economic and business ties, paving the way for a bilateral trade agreement.
Established in 1951 with more than 1,000 members from 500-plus companies, AmCham is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting the interests of American and international businesses in Taiwan. It has published the white paper annually since 1996 to provide suggestions on how to strengthen the local business climate. (DL-E)
