The inaugural meeting of the Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st-Century Trade wrapped up June 27 in Washington, underscoring the commitment of the like-minded partners to continue expansion of economic and trade ties.

Staged both in-person and virtually under the auspices of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S and American Institute in Taiwan, the event was led by Minister without Portfolio John C. C. Deng, head of TECRO in the U.S., Hsiao Bi-khim, and Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, Sarah Bianchi.

The roundtable conversations centered on ways Taiwan and the U.S. can jointly advance trade policies that benefit both workers and businesses. They further discussed how to implement measures that are conducive to inclusive, fair and responsible growth in both economies.

The Executive Yuan said that the meeting demonstrates that transparency and civic participation are important to both sides and that the country is committed to further strengthening the robust Taiwan-U.S. economic partnership.

In a statement released by the U.S. Trade Representative Office, Bianchi said Taiwan and the U.S. have a long-standing trade and investment relationship based on shared values. The initiative will unlock market opportunities, promote innovation and create inclusive economic growth for the two countries.

Launched June 1, the Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st-Century Trade encompasses key areas such as the digital economy, trade facilitation, enhanced regulatory practices, support of small and medium enterprises, environmental and climate action, and promotion of standards, non-market practices and policies.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Productive meeting between Minister Deng & Deputy @USTradeRep Bianchi on issues at the heart of the robust #Taiwan-#US economic & trade relationship. We anticipate even more progress going forward on reaching ambitious agreements under the initiative on 21st century trade.” (YCH-E)
